Alpha Five Database Software

Melvin Davidson

Melvin Davidson will show us some of the features of this great software.

Alpha Software's Alpha Five Version 5 has Microsoft Access square in its sights. This robust relational database program offers sophisticated, custom application-design ability through its easy, menu-driven coding.

Scripts are the backbone of Alpha Five's power. Either menu-driven or hand-coded, they are a combination of macros and Xbasic (Alpha's answer to Microsoft Visual Basic). Much of the Xbasic language is in plain English, so you'll encounter far fewer cryptic codes than with Visual Basic.

Alpha Five keeps you abreast of your project's underlying code throughout the database development process. As the final step during the creation of new elements like forms and reports, the Genie—Alpha's version of wizards—displays a View Xbasic button, which opens a window displaying the Xbasic code of the just-completed process. An included copy of Acrobat reader lets you access the Xbasic and Alpha Five help PDF files, but for simple questions, it would be easier just to type the search term and get a quick answer like you would in a standard Windows help menu. Unfortunately, Alpha Five doesn't offer that, and you must refer to the PDF files.
