Minutes of the January 14, 2004
New
Jersey Computer Club General Meeting
The regular second monthly General Meeting
of the New Jersey Computer Club was held at the North Branch Reformed Church
starting at 6:30 PM. There were 25 members and 2 guests in attendance.
There was no business meeting except for announcements. The sale of
Microsoft Office 2003 software (donated by Microsoft) raised $1,000 for the
NJCC Memorial Award Fund. Fred Sabin then led a lengthy and active Random
Access Q&A starting at 6:45 PM (due to the start of a snowstorm).
Fred Sabin then made an exceptional presentation on Computer Security, with
excellent explanations on computer threats (such as malware) and how to
prevent, detect, and correct them. He then did fantastic demos of
Symantec/Norton Antivirus (and how to update the program and virus
definitions); Ad-aware and SpyBot (free software which were downloaded,
installed, updated and run); Zone Alarm (a free firewall that was
downloaded, installed, and run); and Microsoft Windows Update. There was
considerable interest in current adware and spyware programs, what they can
do, and how you can handle them. The Ad-aware scan on the club computer
found that it contained 63 of these programs, all of which were quarantined.
Considerable interest was expressed in having additional programs on this
topic in the future.
The meeting adjourned at 9:30 PM. |
