Minutes of the February 14, 2001
New Jersey Computer Club Meeting

  • Fred Sabin called the meeting of the New Jersey Computer Club to order at the North Branch Reformed Church at 7:45 PM. There were 62 members and guests in attendance.

  • Fred welcomed all in attendance.

  • A Motion was Made/Seconded & Approved by a two-thirds vote of the regular membership present and entitled to vote that:

"Article 3 - MEMBERSHIP - SECTION 1" be changed FROM the current: "Meetings shall be open to the public at no cost." TO the proposed: "Public 'guests' are invited to attend a maximum of two NJCC meetings at no charge, after which they must join the NJCC as 'members' if they wish to attend further meetings and/or participate in NJCC affairs." (NOTE: This is in conformance with ongoing NJCC policy and our IRS 501(c)7 tax exempt filing and approval status. If the NJCC is "open to the general public" we can lose our tax exemption.)

NOTE: Per the NJCC "Constitution & By-Laws," this Motion was previously Made/Seconded & Approved by the Executive Committee on January 10th, and by a majority vote of the regular membership present and entitled to vote at the January 10th NJCC General Meeting. This motion and vote satisfied the requirement of being ratified by a two-thirds vote of the regular membership present and entitled to vote at a subsequent meeting within six months of the initial meeting.

  • A Motion was Made/Seconded & Approved to approve the Minutes and Treasurer's Report as posted in the Newsletter on the "njcc.org" website.

  • Fred announced that Juno had made potentially significant changes to their "Terms and Conditions" (Service Agreement Section 2.5) and suggested that members review them carefully. He also noted that AT&T WorldNet has new lower cost "I495" and "AT&T 7/7" plans (with a browser advertising bar on Internet connections).

  • John Beck and Rich Byrne announced that "TurboTax" & "Quicken Suite 2001" Workshops will be held on February 21st, and a "Microsoft Word" Presentation on March 14th. Details may be found at the "njcc.org" website.

  • Two presentations were made to the NJCC.

  1. Bruce Fries presented "MP3 Audio Compression Technology." This program explained the fundamentals of digital audio on PCs; recording and playing music on PCs; audio compression technologies; music on the Internet; and the legal issues surrounding online music. He then had autographed copies of his book "The MP3 and Internet Audio Handbook" for sale at discounted prices.

  1. Frank Kovacs presented "NewDeal Office" and "GreenPC." NewDeal Office is a DOS based software with a GUI word processor, spreadsheet, database, drawing, email, web browser, chat, and web editing applications that can run on older computers with only 1 MB RAM and a 20 MB hard drive. GreenPC sells refurbished PC systems with Windows 95 and NewDeal Office for only $275.

  • The meeting ended at 9:30 PM.

        Respectfully Submitted,

        Fred Sabin, President
