MINUTES OF THE
April 10, 2002 MEETING
OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
OF THE NEW JERSEY COMPUTER CLUB
Present:
Doug Beck, John Beck, Terry Beck, John Biegel, Rich
Byrne, Phil Corbo, Stephen Emde, Tom Kehoe, Lenny Laich, John O’Neill, and
Fred Sabin.
The
meeting was called to order at 8:55 p.m. at the North Branch Reformed Church by
Fred Sabin.
-
Lenny
Laich agreed to remain NJCC's 3rd Vice President with the understanding that
the scheduling of NJCC functions would be arranged directly with the church
office, rather than through him.
-
Fred
Sabin reported that since it is always possible that the NBRC may become
unavailable for our meetings for reasons beyond our control, we should look
for another backup place to have our meetings if this should happen. Such a
contingency was briefly discussed a couple of years ago when the NJCC was
growing, and again when we were considering joint activities/memberships
with RVCC. The NBRC Fellowship Hall has a maximum official capacity of 138
people. He urged those present to check out any potential places that we
might use and bring this info to future meetings.
-
Motion
(Made/Seconded & Approved): That $500 be approved for a 2002 NJCC
Founders Memorial Award/Scholarship to a Raritan Valley Community College
student (pending membership approval at a general meeting). Other schools
may be considered in the future.
-
Due
to business commitments, Doris Smith will be unable to continue as NJCC
Refreshment Chairperson. We need to decide what to do in this matter, as we
have not had anyone volunteer to take over this position. Mary and Henry
Gorski will do the refreshments for the next two meetings.
-
John
O'Neill has proposed that we consider making the membership year coincide
with our financial and calendar year - that is Jan 1 to Dec 31. For this
year, everyone who is paid up through September will have her/his membership
extended through the end of December. In the future, when someone joins NJCC
after January, his/her dues will be prorated. The motion to have the
membership year coincide with the calendar year was approved.
-
As
a point of information, Fred informed the Executive Committee that there are
NJCC officers who will be giving computer classes and private home
instruction for a fee. There was a consensus that such private activities by
individuals, outside the auspices of the Club, were appropriate.
-
Jitka
Souckova, RVCC Computer Club President, has communicated the following to
NJCC with a request for assistance:
A.) A
community project for this semester: Free class with two section for senior
citizens /how to buy and how to use computer/. I have finally been able to
get free room for April 27th /Saturday/, would you or anyone in your club be
interested in presenting in this event? I need someone who is experienced in
this field and can do good job. I am sure you are one of the TOP, now it is
just a question if you have a time on Saturday 4/27 from 9-12 morning.
Please let me know if you could help us so I can seriously put this event
into work.
B.) Also
on May 2nd we are having RVCC Spring Picnic, our club will be holding Smash
the Computer fund raiser and table with info, if you interested to stop buy
and try to recruit some young people for NJCC please let me know and I will
give you the details.
Fred will keep the Executive Committee informed of further developments.
-
Lenny
Laich has proposed that a cable modem be installed at the NBRC under the
following conditions: NBRC Buildings & Grounds to pay half of the
installation price from their Supplies budget and the NBRC will pay the
other half. The 24x7 monthly
cost of $70 for a business usage would be met as follows: the church would
pay $50, the Preschool $13, and the NJCC Computer Club $7. The NJCC $7
monthly cable fee would be added to the regular NJCC monthly NBRC rental
fee.
A motion committing the Club to the seven-dollar per month fee was passed.
-
The
Trenton Computer Festival will be held at the New Jersey Convention Center
in the Raritan Center at Edison, NJ, on May 4th & 5th, including a User
Group Officer's Conference on Sunday at 10 AM. Information is available at
http://www.tcf-nj.org or directly from Scott Vincent at email address:
scottvin@optonline.net. Scott is the President of the Amateur Computer Group
of New Jersey and President and Co-Director of The Trenton Computer
Festival.
-
Doug
Beck was authorized to make a proposal for a new Club PC for a cost not to
exceed $300 to President Fred Sabin. Fred will then seek email approval from
the other members of the Executive Committee.
-
Information
on how to obtain free PC Expo passes will be placed in the
password-protected portion of the Club's Web site.
The
next meeting of the Executive Committee will be scheduled at a later date.
The
meeting adjourned at 9:32 p.m.
